Ben Spatz

I work on embodied knowledge and "practice as research," where the issue of documentation and archiving is essential. I am also a fellow at the Schwartz Communication Institute at Baruch College, which has developed an open-source program called VOCAT for recording and annotating student presenations. Here is my professional bio:

Ben Spatz is Founder and Artistic Director of Urban Research Theater in New York City. His solo performance RITE OF THE BUTCHER (Cave Soak Festival, 2012; United Solo Festival, 2011) explores themes of power and violence through a unique synthesis of poetry, martial dance, and folk songs in an invented language. With Maximilian Balduzzi, he created and performed in PLAYWAR (Abrons Arts Center, 2012; Movement Research Festival, 2010) and THEATRICALE (Lincoln Center Atrium, 2011). Ben has taught and led workshops at Theaterlab, Culture Push, Yale University, and the City University of New York, where he is also an advanced doctoral candidate writing on embodied technique. He has been a resident artist at Cave Arts and Movement Research and his writing has been published in both academic and artistic journals.
